The Kingdom at JMU

One of the benefits of going to college is the free movie sneak previews. Earlier this evening I caught The Kingdom at James Madison U.

I am not a film critic so I won’t bother to talk about that side of the movie. Instead I’ll inject some politics into what has been advertised as a politically driven action flick about F.B.I. special agents traveling to Saudi Arabia to track down some Islamic terrorists.

As one movie critic puts it, “What begins as specifically grounded political thriller escalates into a well-crafted formulatic actioner that propagates American gung-ho and could have been set against various political contexts, rather than Saudi Arabia, where this yarn takes place”.

Basically what the reviewer is saying is that Hollywood grew some balls and made a 21st century Rambo film!

We have had to wait a while for this. Hollywood has been scared to feed the desire of American audiences to see some good ole Islamic terrorist ass kicking. Instead they have made intellectually corrupt films like Syriana that are no more than politically correct liberal propaganda.

The Kingdom takes place in the turbulent background of Saudi Arabia. The film provides background information about the history between America and the Saudi Royalty, with a specific focus on the tense situation between Islamic conservatives and the corrupting influence of oil riches on the 5,000+ royals.

The film does not empathize with these self-crowned monarchs, but instead shows them as slightly corrupt and thoroughly inept. There’s one great scene where Jamie Foxx’s character reads a young prince the riot act after the prince asks Foxx if he and his F.B.I. team would like to go on safari.

Overall I suggest checking out the movie. It is far from a date movie, but the action scenes at the end of the movie make it worth while and the hilarious portrayal of the State Department as a bunch of paper pushing dweebs is worth a few dollars and 110 minutes of your time.
