Liberal Insanity
Now, usually I don’t pay much attention to things not reported in some large media outlet, but this is way too good to pass up. Despite my somewhat innocent-looking title, it is actually meant to be taken literally.
Dr. Lyle Rossiter has written a new book named “The Liberal Mind: The Psychological Causes of Political Madness.” In it, he apparently examines liberalism from a clinical psychology standpoint; and concludes that liberals are, in fact, off their collective rocker.
Just when you thought that politics couldn’t possibly get more fun…

This part from the linked article was good: “Dr. Rossiter says the liberal agenda preys on weakness and feelings of inferiority in the population by:
1) creating and reinforcing perceptions of victimization;
2) satisfying infantile claims to entitlement, indulgence and compensation;
3)augmenting primitive feelings of envy;
4) rejecting the sovereignty of the individual, subordinating him to the will of the government”.

Well well well, looks like science explains what conservatives have known all along! So since we know they’re crazy, why are people actually believing Al Gore? Liberals Are Crazy: An Inconvenient Truth.

“A social scientist who understands human nature will not dismiss the vital roles of free choice, voluntary cooperation and moral integrity – as liberals do.”
If this person was worth his salt, he would not make sweeping gernalization - period. Absolutely no “science” involved at all. I know a lot of Liberals and a lot of Conservatives. NOBODY I know dismisses free choice, voluntary cooperation, and moral integrity. His premise is based on false understanding of the Liberal philosophy (if there is such a thing at all) and it appears to be intentionally misleading. Looks to me like he wants to sell books and so is being as controversial as possible while citing his supposed credentials. I am not suprised that you all have bitten - it was writen with your wallets in mind.

Eric…sweeping generalizations is what social scientists DO. We search for, find, and publicize wide-sweeping trends across large populations; the science applied being that of empirical statistical data. Your position, on the other hand, is that “NOBODY I know dismisses free choice, voluntary cooperation, and moral integrity.” In this, there is no scientific basis for your conclusion; which, if it is not intentionally misleading in its own right, is unintentionally so. Nor does the author actually say that liberals are dismissive of those concepts; he says that they dismiss the vital roles which they play in politics - an empirically true statement, when one examines the data. Really, Eric, I thought you’d be the last one to make such an emotional argument as you have.

“In this, there is no scientific basis for your conclusion”
Nor is ther any for the author’s. Actually at least mine was based on a sampling (albeit not random nor likely statisitcally significant) but you were able to criticize my methods and samples. This guy just says “I am an expert and I have concluded X.” No science involved at all.
Also notice that I put forth no conclusion just provided data that disproved the premise of his theory (which was still a sweeping generalization). I in no way attempted to extend my observations to other Liberals.
If you think this is science, you need to study harder.
“Nor does the author actually say that liberals are dismissive of those concepts;”
I think you should read it again:
“…will not dismiss the vital roles of free choice, voluntary cooperation and moral integrity – AS LIBERALS DO.”
Pretty plain English - not based on any scientific data as far as I can see. Any peer review provided for his conclusions? I thought not…

I am inclined to agree with Eric. This book is unlikely anything more than humerous junk science.
