Willfull Blindness: Obama in Iraq

The WaPohas an interesting (for them) editorial up today criticizing Obama’s stubborn adherence to a 16 month withdrawal timetable as “eccentric”.  Whether eccentric is the closest the WaPo’s editorial board can come to calling Obama’s idea what it is, dangerous and stupid, I don’t know.  What I do know is this, it speaks volumes about Obama if despite his Harvard education and his allegedly deific judgement he cannot recognize reality.

It is true that Nouri al Maliki came out in support of a timetable.  That timetable, however, would be one set by Iraqis, the Prime Minister said, not Americans.  That timetable would also be based on the capabilities of Iraqi forces, as McCain and General Petreaus suggest.  Obama’s timetable is neither of those, and he admits it.  In a blessed moment of candor, The One admitted that he would set his timetable according to his priorities, both foreign and domestic.

Translation, if things go to pot (b/c of an AQI resurgence maybe?) or the economy goes south (b/c of socialized medicine) Obama has no qualms halting the withdrawal or, as he has said before, recommitting troops to quell the anarchy.  Here’s the question, why would he pursue such a reckless strategy in the first place?  If his judgement is so good, why pursue a strategy he knows is likely to fail?  The answer, because he is the change we have been waiting for.

Obama knows two things: that Americans are leaning Democratic and are tired of being embarrassed in Iraq and that re-election is easier than first-time election.  He also knows that a housing correction is on the horizon and with it a return to robust economic growth; which he can take credit for in a 2012 re-election campaign.  The fact that he might have to re-fight the last two years of the Iraq war doesn’t seem to matter, so long as he can finally ascend to his rightful place in world history (what you thought this was about America?).

Thankfully, he is on record saying all of these things, even the parts about his being a world-changing figure.  In the YouTube Age, messianic, egomaniacal snake-oil salesmen like Obama can’t hide from the multitudes of pronouncements and promises they make along the way.  Hopefully, the public will not be as willfully blind as the One is.  Hopefully, they take the red pill.
