While holding court before a small crowd of admirers, who also happened to be reporters, Barack Obama had this to say “The objective of this trip was to have substantive discussions with people like President Karzai or Prime Minister Maliki or President Sarkozy or others who I expect to be dealing with over the next eight to 10 years.”

Regardless of the fact that he won’t be in office for ten years, Obama further demonstrates that he knows practically nothing about foreign policy, since with the slight exception of Karzai, none of those three leaders are likely to be around in eight to ten years. And this guy taught Constitutional Law where?

I am sure most of you out there remember the comments Phil Gramm made a few days ago. His comment on a “mental recession” made headline news and immediately afterwards, condemnation from McCain and Obama were expressed. But were his comments completely off base?

First of all, I think we need to define what a recession is. A recession is “A period of general economic decline; specifically, a decline in GDP for two or more consecutive quarters.” As of right now, we have not met this criteria. The first quarter of 2008 had our GDP growing a mere 1%. So our economy experienced growth, despite the growth being rather anemic.

So if we have no hit a recession hit, why are Americans feeling like the end of the world is near? This economy is actually doing better than it did during the recessions of 1990 and 2001, but Americans seem to be feeling it harder. Neil Irwin of the Washington post explains in the article the increased price of gasoline, and thus the increased price of everything else is making Americans feel the pinch. The article explains:

“Someone who has to pay an extra $25 to fill up his car is reminded of that cost once a week — or more often if you count the times he is driving down the road and sees the $4 per gallon price in giant numbers on a sign. Technically, he is no worse off than if his rent had increased by $100 a month. But it feels a lot worse.”

The example above mixed in with the media’s constant reports of impending economic disaster (more recent examples include the bailouts of both Freddie Mac and Fanny Mae), Americans truly believe economic turmoil is hitting this country. Interestingly enough, in polls where citizens were asked how they were doing personally, they typically said they were doing fine despite minor fears. However when asked about the economy as a whole, they said it was going to hell in a hand basket.

So is this a mental recession? I will agree with Phil Gramm that it most certainly is. While calling Americans whiners is not the best thing to do during a election year, sometimes the truth about a situation is hard to hear. We can only hope Americans who know better can explain to their neighbors that things are not that bad, and hope Liberals do not manipulate this fear to get elected.

For Barack Obama, a funny thing happened on the way to the White House; John McCain caught up in the polls. The question is why. With his campaign seeming to lose traction yet again and without a clear line of attack or coherent message, even the most die-hard of Republican strategists were criticizing McCain and girding for a November defeat. Then it got worse, Obama moved to the center, intent on making this a style contest, one he would almost certainly win. (more…)

For the first time in history, Congress has the approval of less than 10% of the American people. Proving once again why nobody should vote for them, the Democrats have managed to steer Congress into historically horrible territory. Maybe this has something to do with promising the American people things they had no intention of delivering (Iraq exit strategy, environmental legislation, a fix for the energy problems). Rasmussen has the full report. Remember, never underestimate the ability of the Democratic Party to lose an election.

Today in a 5-4 decision, the Supreme Court upheld a lower court’s ruling that the Washington D.C. handgun ban was unconstitutional. Hot on the heels of this decision came an op-ed piece from Colbert I. King of the Washington Post - one so mind-numbingly silly that it inspired me to come out of my blogging retirement to destroy it. My apologies to the current bloggers for taking the story of the day.

If you’ve been paying attention to the latest developments in the transportation fiasco, you might be interested and pleased to learn that a performance audit of VDOT passed out of the House Transportation Committee and out of the House Appropriations Committee. We need to keep the pressure on and demand a performance audit before anymore money is spent on transportation. Conservative groups throughout VA are all over this issue and pressuring Democrat lawmakers to get on board with this common sense step to improving VA transportation.

Call you delegate today and demand:

A performance audit of VDOT before any new money is spent

A constitutional amendment to keep the Transportation Trust Fund away from the hands of legislators and governors who might be inclined to spend the money on things besides transportation.

No new taxes and fees whatsoever.

With help from conservatives across VA, we can make sure a sensible approach to VA’s transportation crisis is undertaken. Act today! A simple phone call is really all it takes.

H/T: John Taylor, Host of VA Tuesday Morning Group
